Update 3/7/26: With safety as our top priority for participants, volunteers, and staff, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Bangtail Biathlon. While we always hope to deliver a great event for our community, current conditions make it impossible to host the race safely.

We sincerely appreciate your understanding and your support of Crosscut Mountain Sports Center, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Crosscut for future events. Please stay tuned for an opportunity to join us at a shootout in the near future.

Shootout Format

This will be a fast-paced, bracket-style biathlon shooting competition with two categories: Novice and Open.

  • Novice athletes use Crosscut-provided rifles, ammo, and a shooting block

  • Open athletes use their own (or leased) biathlon rifles and shoot prone.

The event begins with a timed preliminary round where athletes pair up and shoot four magazines. Athletes are then ranked within their category by fewest misses first, then fastest time.

Based on those rankings, athletes are placed into seeded brackets and compete head-to-head against others at a similar level. Winners move up the range, non-winners move down, creating a dynamic, high-energy format with multiple rounds and constant movement. At the end, top finishers are determined within each bracket, making the Shootout both competitive and fun — whether you’re new to biathlon or a seasoned shooter.

  • Inclement Weather Policy

Adverse temperatures or difficult weather conditions, including but not limited to strong winds, high humidity, air quality, heavy snow, lack of snow, icy track conditions, may require Crosscut and/or the race committee to postpone or cancel the event.

    Inclement Winter Weather Considerations

In determining event modifications or cancellations during cold weather, the following variables must be considered

    • Air temperature (recorded from the CMSC weather station)

    • Time of lowest temperature

    • Temperature trend throughout the day

    • Wind & windchill (forecasted from Sacajawea SNOTEL station)

    • Wind speed and wind gusts (predicted and CMSC live data)

    • Snowfall, both current accumulation and predicted

    • Trail conditions

    • Age of participants

    Decision Making

The decision to cancel or postpone a competition is typically made by the organizing committee in consultation with Crosscut staff and medical staff. This decision considers current and forecasted weather conditions.

Crosscut reserves the right to make a final determination on cancelation.

Temperature Thresholds for Modification and Cancellation

If anywhere on the course is below -20°C (-4°F), an event may be postponed or cancelled. In some cases, competitions may be canceled if temperatures are between -15°C and -20°C (5°F to -4°F), especially when combined with wind chill factors.

At temperatures of -15°C to -20°C (5°F to -4°F) without wind-chill, an event may be run in a modified format at the discretion of the Race Committee in consultation with Crosscut. Modifications may include a shortened course, a modified start time, changes to the minimum age of racers, or other strategies for minimizing risk to racers, staff, and volunteers. Crosscut and the Race Committee will consider the temperature trends, wind chill factors, and course conditions expected during the event before making their decision.

When course temperatures are below -12°C (10°F), a minimum racing age of 14 may be imposed by Crosscut. Other factors (such as temperature trends and wind chill factors) are considered when making this determination.

    Wind Chill Factor

The wind chill factor is critically assessed. Even if temperatures are above the critical threshold, high wind speeds can lead to dangerous wind chill levels, necessitating cancellation or postponement.

    Refunds

There are no refunds allowed for any reason including race cancellation. Entry fees are non-transferable between individuals or to future races. In some instances, Crosscut may offer a voucher for a free race entry to a Crosscut event to be used within one year.

    Cancellation

If Crosscut or the event organizing committee determines that an event cannot be held as scheduled, our first priority will be to select a makeup date later in the season. If no suitable date is available, or conditions prevent rescheduling, the event may be cancelled for the season.
